The Buff-tip Phalera bucephala bears a remarkable resemblance to a broken twig of silver birch. The head looks like a roughly snapped end, the wingtip a cleanly cut twig. Even the lenticels of the birch bark are mimiced in the scales of the moth's wings.

The species is widespread in Britain, and quite common, particularly in the south.

The yellow-and-black caterpillars live gregariously and feed on a number of different deciduous trees, sometimes defoliating entire branches.

If disturbed, the moth falls to the ground, wings and legs tightly rolled into a cylindrical shape, looking even more like a piece of twig!

This was the sixth digital image I ever took - the third (of the same moth) was one of my first postings here. At the time, fresh from film, I had no idea about sharpening, etc., but I learned from you all very quickly! So I've revisited image capture DSCN0006 and make no excuse for uploading it - I think it's not too bad for no.6!

Thank you all very much for your help and honest critiques. Although they may have felt harsh at times (and sometimes you were wrong ;), I now find myself passing on the lessons I have learned over the past year. Thank you again..

Interesting note and great shot, nicely seen and presented. TFS

Hi Nigel,
Wow! talk about blending in. Flawless composition and framing on this shot. The Exposure looks to be right in the money here. The detail is very sharp here! Perfect DOF gives a nice OOF backround! Well done no matter what number it is.
Scott

Hi Nigel, a great improvement from your original image, though according to the rules of the site this should of been posted as a Re-post of the original so the 2 images become linked like a workshop.
Had a quick look at your other images and cannt see how I missed seeing them and commenting, they are all very good, you catch on fast I think

Hi Nigel,
that's a cute moth, it seems it has snow on the back - a wonderful white painting.
Excellent sharpness, I like it, thanks

Amazing mimicry, Nigel.
Nature is full of wonder.
Your excellent focus and exposure bring out the texture of the moth wings very well and show how well the camouflage works.
Great job and TFS. : )
Happy 2006 to you and your family, Nigel.
Thanks for all your wonderful posts and your great help. : )

Wow Nigel, what a great find! The moth certainly looks like a twig off the tree. Good sharpness and colours. Well done, thank you.
PS. I just read your notes Nigel. We can learn by critiques given to us not from praise, that is if we are open to receiving others' honest thoughts. This just shows how much you have improved. I knew NOTHING about PP work, etc, or noise either, and I have left my first posting up as a lesson for me and others.
Cheers, Janice

Amaising photo!
A perfect shot!
Fantastic details ot the moth!
Very good POV!

Perfect exposure and excellent colors Nigel. A very good POV, sharp detail & excellent DOF also. I think the tree itself adds good interest, with all the details seen in the bark there. Very well done.
Thank You!

Nigel, what a perfect camouflage.

Great pov and composition. I like bg too.

I think Howard's workshop did improve the image.

Great colors.

Hi Nigel!
Very good! It's good example of defensive colors insects(animals) can have. You have got this very well against different background. Good sharpness and details.

Stunning capture, nature never ceases to amaze me with camoflauge. This almost looks like a mammal with fur. Great capture!

Only number six?!! Excellent job. The image has composition and clarity. No distracting details in the background and good DOF. Great job even for # 6000.

Hi Nigel,
I like this moth so very well comouflaged. Both the moth and the tree has beautiful texture and colors.
TFS, Jos M.

Sharp shot of an unsual and often "overlooked" subject. Better than the first posting. Good colours and contrast. Remarkable texture. Interesting note. TFR (Thanks For Revisiting!).
