The deserts of central Australia is not the place you would expect to migratory shorebirds, yet half way the remote Strezlecki track, that痴 exactly what we found. Here amongst the hummocky sand dunes is a small oasis; Montecollina bore. The bore and its associated wetland were created in the early 1900s when the bore was sunk to tap the Great Artesian Basin, a vast underground water reserve. The bore was used by drovers (cattlemen) when moving stock along the 620km Strezlecki track from south-western Queensland to the markets in South Australia. Today the bore is a popular camping spot for people travelling the desert route and the wetlands provide the only permanent water for hundreds of kilometres.
The were numerous ducks and other waterbirds there including these Sharp-tailed Sandpipers (Calidris acuminata), a medium-sized migratory shorebird that breeds in Arctic tundra of eastern Siberia. During the northern winter, they migrate to Australia and New Zealand, where they inhabit freshwater and brackish wetlands though most of the continent.
I sat on the bank of the wetland in the afternoon and after a while these guys came close enough to a few shots. The one in the background is slightly out of focus, but I decided to keep it in the image to give depth to the shot.
Hope you like, thanks for looking.

Hi Chris!

As I remember from tv these birds are rather fast and chaotic moving ;-) Good composition with one on FG and repeated one on BG. Good poses and details.

Beautiful shot of those sandpipers, Chris. The sharpness is all the more commendable if these sandpipers are like most sandpipers, meaning that they move very fast. The colors and details on them are stunning. What a thrill it must be to find these visitors from afar in your neck of the woods. Congratulations and TFS. : )

Cute little birds. I like the warm colours and sharp focus and the fact that they are doing something.

Great shot of the birds. Excellent pose. The lighting, POV, details and colours are very nice. Did you see them catch anything?

So that's where you get your name Chris, very good shot with accurate DOF. Very nice work.

Nice shot Chris!
Very good POV and composition, great details too. I like the DOF a lot. I just think it would've been better to blur the BG a bit more cause it seems to be quite noisy.
Anyway,I like it very much.

Well captured Chris,
Good detail, colours, sharpness and POV.
Well composed, good exposure and nicely framed.
Thanks for posting.

Hi Chris,

Chris, nice guys; I guess we don't have them here in Brazil, although I'm not that sure about it.

Great moment in this very nice shot. The one in the bottom seems to be worried about your presence.

This makes great honour to your nick :)
Great to see this ones in action. Maybe a larger crop would be nicer to see at high resolution, but I agree with a tighter one to show better details in TN. Thanks Chris.
