Rosie and I spent this past weekend at a little cabin high in the mountain near the town of Gauley West Virginia. It was nice just to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily work life.

I spotted this pretty Pipevine Swallowtail as it visited the many wild flowers along the banks of the Kanawha River. It had rained off and on all morning long and was pretty dark and cloudy out when I took this shot.

Like the Monarch, this is a butterfly that predators avoid because of its nasty taste. Look-alikes which benefit from this avoidance are the Black Swallowtails, Red-spotted Purples, and the female Black Swallowtails. These mimic butterflies also have very similar flight behaviors.

A fairly large butterfly with a wing span of between 2 3/4 to 5 inches. You will find the Pipevine Swallowtail in open forests. woodland edges, roadsides, fields and meadows.

My first viewing of this giant of a Swallowtail, Ron, and I'm really stunned by its unmatched beauty. You couldn't think of a better perspective; the open wings reveal the complete range of markings and colors it is endowed with.
An absolutely professional job there. Thanks a lot for sharing this flawless beauty.

Hi Ron,

The flowers are helping to frame the butterfly. The point of view is showing the details of the Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly. The good luminosity is bringing out the colors. Have a nice dya.
