The banteng

or tembadau (Bos javanicus) is a relatively small wild ox that lives in Southeast Asia. As beef Bali, it has been domesticated by humans and was introduced in Australia where it forms a large Maroon population. This bull is the symbol of the Party Demokrasi Perjuangan Indonesia or the Indonesian Democratic Party control.
The banteng are similar to domestic cattle. They present a significant sexual dimorphism. The dress of the males ranges from dark brown to dark reddish brown, while those of females are more blondes. Males and females have a white belly, with spots on the hindquarters and "low" on the legs. Females reach adult size in 3-4 years against 5-6 for males. Animals weighing 400 to 900 kg, a length of about two meters and a height at withers of 150 cm (females) to 180 cm (males). The horns of bulls are hard and curved upward and may reach 75 cm long and are separated on the top of the head by a kind of helmet, which is distinct coat, those cows are much shorter.
The area included the original broadcast Southeast Asia and continental islands of Java and Borneo. The domesticated banteng have been introduced by man over many other islands of Indonesia and in much smaller number in other parts of the world (see Domestication). The habitat of wild banteng is mainly composed of tropical forests. They are also occasionally graze in open grasslands.
The banteng live in groups of 2 to 40 cows with their calves and a bull. There are also herds of males and solitary bulls, too old or too weak to lead a flock. After a gestation period of 285 days, the cows give birth once a year they are nursing a little over nine months. It reaches sexual maturity after two to four years. The life expectancy of banteng is 14 to 17, up to 26 years in captivity.
The wild banteng is listed by IUCN to the number of endangered species. Among the reasons for the decline in its numbers are cited the destruction of tropical forests, crossing with domestic cattle and oxen Bali and contamination by diseases common among domestic cattle. In the Southeast Asia the numbers have declined dramatically in recent decades. Thailand is estimated to decline nearly 85% between 1980 and 2000. In the Malay Peninsula, the banteng have already disappeared in the 50's. Instead the numbers on Java are stable when there are no reliable figures for Borneo. The total population of wild banteng is estimated at 5000.
The banteng are among the five species of cattle domesticated by man. The date of their domestication is unknown, it must have taken place, however, several centuries before Christ. We think it likely that the Java thing happened, on the continent we already had water buffalo and they felt no need of a new species of domesticated cattle. Java they went on many islands, where originally there was no wild banteng, such as Bali, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Timor, Lombok and Sumbawa. As Bali has been for centuries the center of breeding banteng, the domestic banteng are known under the name "Bali cattle". Today there are about 1.5 million.
Due to the introduction of other domestic cattle in Indonesia, there are fewer and fewer cattle in Bali pedigree. Early on there were crosses between zebu and Bali cattle resulting in the birth of new breeds of cattle
Bali cattle were introduced in 1849 in Australia where they have become wild and are now a population of 1 000 animals living in the Garig Gunak Barlu National Park in the Northern Territory.
