This is a female Large Wall Brown (Lasiommata maera).

When she basks in the warmth of the sun she rests with her wings half open and she uses this same wing position to glide for a little while between unpredictable turns in what is otherwise a jerky flight.

The male has smaller eye markings with sometimes only two instead of three on the hindwings. His forewings are also darker owing to a large patch of scent scales.

Like its relative the Wall Brown it tends to keep to areas where there are rocks or stone walls, but it also like to rest on fallen trees, like this individual is doing. It takes nectar from various flowers but as we are in a drought situation, those flowers to be found are dry.

In fact, my title refers not only to this Brown butterfly but to the brown vegetation withered by the drought. The OOF BG indicates this. The only green vegetation is to be found in the shade.

In Scania it is only found in the NE where we live, but it is not uncommon on the outskirts of forests in most of S. and C. Sweden. The Large Wall Brown occurs in most of Europe except the UK and further south it is found in more mountainous rocky habitats. Like all Browns or Satyrids, the larval host plants are various species of grasses.

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about two meters. I relied on a DOF to make it all sharp but didn稚 quite succeed. Here it might have been better to focus on the body instead of the right wings. After moderate cropping and size reduction the image was sharpened a little.

Hi Ivan,
Beautiful capture of this butterfly.Details,3D effect, cross framing and composition are wonderful.
Thanks for posting.

F/10 has given this image a three-dimensional quality, Ivan.
Your settings are just perfect in terms of the objectives you had in mind.
The clarity and sharpness on the wings are just outstanding.
I also love the brown ambience here though it is distressing to know that it is composed of the withering vegetation in your drought-hit area.
Here in north India, we have a really strong monsoon going on at the moment. Whether it would stay that way is a moot question.
Regards.
Ram

hello Ivan,
This is one of my favourite butterflies, meeting it quite often in my natal Valais. I like your brown on brown picture a lot, it unifies all elements of the picture well. I hope that your dry period came to an end. We just have rain and clouds for months :-(
Best regards
Anne

Hi Ivan,
I think you maximized the DOF throughout the wings for F/10, just the right point of focus IMO. Handheld you need the 1/400th for good sharpness of course. Very good colors, details, exposure, and comp.
Great title too :)
Well done & TFS!
Howard

I WOULD NEVER THINK TO TRY AND CORRECT ANYTHING ON THIS ONE...IT IS SIMPLY PERFECT...THE EARTH TONES TRULY DOMINATE IN A LAND I ALWAYS THINK OF AS PORTRAYED IN MOVIES...GREEN AND LUSH IN SUMMER AND WHITE IN WINTER...BUT NOW HAVING SEEN SEASONS AND OTHER THINGS IN YOUR IMAGES...I FIND THAT MOVIES CAN PLAY TRICKS:-) NICELY DONE IVAN. GLAD TO SEE YOU POST TODAY...

Hello Ivan,
this belongs to the kind of butterfly pictures which I like particularly. The wing markings
are clearly shown and in their natural colours. The great depth of field works well here
so that the entire wing surface and the antennae are seen with excellent sharpness.
Composition is also perfect.
1A candidate for the Satyrinae Theme.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Ivan,

This is so beautiful! How nice of the butterfly to settle on a tree whose bark matched his wing markings. Beautiful position, fine details, excellent composition.

Hello Ivan,
Not easy to make the focus on the butterflies, with the difficult choise body-wings. The result of your shot is good, with so beautiful colours. Best regards,
Catherine

Lovely pose well captured with great detail and natural colour.

Can I feel it?I percieve I can, and that is the best part about this shot, Ivan...
I do not know how you achieved this effect, but it is so dramatic..but real...
I know, you'd be saying to yourself that you do not believe in contradictions!
Nor do I...but I wrote that to just get that message across, my friend..I feel so helpless looking at this shot and feeling the water or watever the liquid is in my screen!!
going right where it belongs, Ivan, into my favs!

Ciao Ivan, elegant lasiommata with fantastic colors, fine details and splendid sharpness, good diagonal composition, very well done, ciao Silvio
