Up to now, 464 species from 21 bird orders have been recorded in Turkiye. First order is GAVIIFORMES (Dalgı輒uşları [TR], Loons, Divers [EN]) and second one is PODICIPEDIFORMES (Yumurtapi輙eri [TR], Grebes [EN]). Later is represented by five species from single family, Podicipedidae. These with Turkish and English vernacular names as fallow
*** Tachybaptus ruficollis (Pallas, 1764) K錮k Batağan veya Yumurtapi輅 (Little Grebe)
*** Podiceps cristatus Linnaeus, 1758 Bahri (Great Crested Grebe)
*** Podiceps grisegana (Boddaert, 1783) Kızıl Boyunlu Batağan (Red-Necked Grebe)
*** Podiceps auritus (Linnaeus, 1758) Kulaklı Batağan (Slavonian Grebe)
*** Podiceps nigricollis Brehm, 1831 Kara Boyunlu Batağan (Black-Necked Grebe)
Tachybaptus ruficollis with 23-29 cm in lenght is the smallest of these grebes. It has a pointed bill. Adults have bright yellow gape, rufous colored neck, cheeks and flanks and dark dorsum in summer or breeding period. Rufous parts changes to dirty brownish grey in in juveniles and adults in other seasons of year. General coloration in winter is buffy with a darker cap and dorsum.
Although T. ruficollis can not walk well since its leg on far back; it perfectly swims and dives. It in catches fishes and invertebrates such as aquatic insects underwater. Its nests on edges of the water and it hides among vegetation or dives into water. Behaviors of all grebes in these are same.
[I try to explain scientific names' derivatio nominis (etimology), especially with my last posts. Today, I didnt write any thing for Latin origins of last species name. After M.K. Atatr (matatur) and B. G輓en (beroecypriensis)'s questions, I am adding for this species too]. I already mention "fast diving as escaping" and "rufous colored neck and throat", so tachy= "fast", baptus (think baptise)= "diving", rufi= "rufous", "red", collis= "collare", "throat".
Little Grebe ranges widely in Europe, Asia (except for northern half of Asia, most of Arabian Peninsula, north part of China), Africa and New Guinea. This Batağan occurs in almost all over the country except for southeastern Turkiye. It is common in Cyprus Island.
The photograph was taken in Ayluga which one of the most important wetlands in the island and located near Gazimağusa of K.K.T.C. (T.R.N.C.). Like other Mediterranean big islands, hunting in Cyprus is very very common and all birds incl. domestic sparrow and pidgeon excape quickly. So, I stayed and camouflaged among Tamarix bushes, common in this area, for his capture, helding the camera on hand.

Merhaba Ahmet,
Nice capture of a Little Grebe in winter plumage. Great composition with fine water movement and excellent sharpness and lighting. One has to be patient with reflexes as they dive so often!
Well done my friend, and thanks for sharing this one!
Ivan

Merhaba Dr. Ahmet,

Very sharp shot with great reflexion and water ripple.
wasalam,
/Tabib/.

Hola Ahmet,
A fine capture of a lovely, smiling bird with a nice reflection and an enchanting fore- and background. However, I couldn't see any explanation of that interesting sounding generic name, Tachybaptus, it has to do something with "speed", but what?
Mehmet

Hello Ahmet,
Came home late tonight, so I'm just marking today
Congratulations for this fine capture my friend

Everton

Thanks Ahmet for the Cypriote "yumurtapi輅". Our birds looks like the native peoples in habits- as I always do:)- and we prefer to make all our actions quickly. So, it is normal to escape faster than those of the mainlands relatives :D . By the way, I know the word of "Tachy" means "quickly" (in Lat.) in the generic name. Do u know what is the mean of "baptus"?
TFS.
Greetings,
Bayram

Ahmet Hocam,

Hello Ahmet,
Fine capture of this wet Little Grebe in winter dress. Great focus and fine reflections in the water. We sometimes see them here on the river in winter but I look forward to summer when we can hear their lovely bubbling call and see their gorgeous plumage. Good note too!
TFS and regards, Ulla
