Waipoua Forest, Upper North Island

Just over three hours drive north of Auckland on State Highway 12 you will drive through Waipoua Forest. The drive gives you wonderful scenery of the beauty of the forest. It winds through magnificent stands of tall kauri, rimu and northern rata, and many ferns trees and native bushes. I love driving north this way. There is so much to see, and the beauty of the trees, bushes, ferns, and mosses are so amazing.

Several huge trees are easily reached from the road. Te Matua Ngahere the 'Father of the Forest', has a trunk over five metres in diameter, believed to be the widest girth of any kauri tree in New Zealand. This massive tree is a 50 metre drive then a 10-minute walk from the main road. Close by are the Four Sisters, a graceful collection of four tall trees in close proximity. Also near Te Matua Ngahere is the Phantom Tree, believed to be the second largest in the forest.

From the same access road you can follow a half-hour walking track to the Yakas Tree, the eighth largest kauri in New Zealand, and continue if you like for the whole two to three hour trek to the Park Information Centre.

This is the pathway that leads to the above trees. Here you can see young Rimu trees and Manuka along with Bracken and Kiokio ferns.

Hi Janice,
I can understand that you love this part of nature. What a wonderful forrest. We don't have this trees here in Germany, but I enjoy looking at them. I like that single tree standing on the lane, what a lovely motive, thank you very much. Have a nice sunday, bye

Hi Janice

Nice work. This is a really good shot. Technically I think it is one of your best. Congrats!

Hello Janice!
It's just amazing place with warm, nice light.
It's is something "unusual" in sound of this kind of words like "Manuka", "Waipoua" or "Kiokio" :-)

Janice, a simple but nice picture.

I like colors and composition.

The tree in the middle of the road is a nice impediment.

Nice pathway lined with these wonderful trees, Janice.

Is the air cool and moist in this forested area as well?

I'll just go grab my sneakers and we'll be off:-))

Thank you for sharing.
