RED PANDA
Lesser Panda
Class: MAMMALIA

I saw this Red Panda at Auckland Zoo. This is one of the last photos I took on my camera 3 weeks ago when it stopped working!! And it has been in the Canon hospital since then. I know it痴 not overly sharp, but hopefully that part of it will also be fixed when I get the camera back.

These Red Pandas are on the move all the time, and it isn稚 until they decide to rest or eat that they finally stop moving. Here, he paused for a second before he decided to jump down onto another branch.

Red Pandas features point towards them being closely related to the giant panda and similar to raccoons and bears but are now in a 'family' of their own: Ailuropodidae.

DIET

The diet consists mainly of bamboo, plus grasses, roots, acorns, berries and lichen. It sometimes takes insects, eggs, young birds and small rodents. Because the lesser panda has the digestive system of a carnivore it cannot digest wood fibre. It therefore has to eat large amounts of bamboo every day in order to survive.

BEHAVIOUR/SOCIAL ORGANISATION
The Panda is active between dusk and dawn, sleeping in trees during the day. The adults are generally solitary, but sometimes travel in pairs or small family groups. They mark their territory with scent from an anal gland, urine and faeces. Their trails are also marked automatically with scent from glands on the soles of the feet. They feed mostly on the forest floor but are excellent climbers and they are able to escape predators by climbing high into trees.

VOCALISATION
The usual communication call is a series of short whistles and squeaks. When frightened or angry they stand on their hind legs and give sharp spitting hisses (like a cat), or a series of snorts.

LIFESPAN
Up to 14 years in captivity, but probably a lot less in the wild.

CAPTIVE LESSER PANDAS
Lesser pandas survive and breed well in captivity in many zoos around the world. They are seldom aggressive and are relatively easy to tame and handle.

A great capture Janice, we have one at my local zoo but he always seems to be asleep up in the tree tops (as it says in your notes) and i have never taken a good picture.

Janice, this is my favourite animal and I have been known to stand for hours at Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo to capture a picture. This is perfect and something that I have not been able to achieve personally.
