This shot was taken at the Conservatory of Flowers at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

I do not know the name of this formidable-looking plant, but I was very impressed with its 4 to 5 cm-long spikes that came in triplicates, and the beautiful geometric patterns that they formed on the trunk of this tree-looking cactus plant.

Madagascar Palm
Pachypodium lamerei

This Pachypodium has a shiny silver trunk covered with thorns.
The leaves form only at the top of the trunk, like a Palm Tree.
However the Madagascar Palm is not really a palm. It is actually a succulent related to Plumerias.
Flowers are in spring through the summer, on and off through all the warm months. Blooms are not made until the plant is older.
Prior to its first bloom of the spring, this Pachypodium produces amazing seed pods that look like cucumbers. Left alone, they eventually open along the seam revealing great numbers of white-winged seeds
Most Pachypodium require very little water, even less in the winter when it looses it leaves.
Pachypodium lamerei protection against being eaten by animals are long, sharp, stiff needles that grow everywhere along the trunk and branches. Walking near this plant requires respect for this effective defense.

Encore une fois, like the French would say... Another geometrical perfection, I have something in same range of cacti pattern play too...

Great picture, Manyee. I love it!
Delicious colors, sharp to the top of the stings. Superb composition - nothing to be cropped off. Best regards,

Excellent details of this magnificent Pachypodium! Very good composition and POV! The colors look bright and natural and contrast is nice! Great exposure too! I own a Pachypodium geayi which looks almost identical with the lamerei species and I know it hurts when you're not careful with their thorns :) Congratulations and TFS!

Regards,
Eddie
