The beauty of Texas never ceases to amaze me. We are so blessed down here. And our beauty is a tough kind of beauty. No helpless frailty among our richest bloomers. (ha ha ha) Nope, we have some seriously self-sufficient bloomers.

Brown-spine prickly-pear cactus, Brown-spined prickly pear, New mexico prickly pear, Purple-fruited prickly pear, Tulip prickly-pear, Tulip pricklypear
Cactaceae (Cactus Family)

USDA Symbol: OPPH
USDA Native Status: Native to U.S.

This prickly-pear cactus forms dense thickets 8 ft. across and up to 8 ft. tall, though usually shorter. Masses of yellow flowers age to a peach-color and are followed by maroon-colored fruits.

The Desert Prickly-pear is an erect or sprawling shrub with fleshy fruit and brown to black spines. This species has a very wide range, and up to ten or more varieties have been described, making exact identification confusing. Usually the varieties are distinguished by pad size, spine distribution on the pad, spine color and size, and fruit length. The Desert Prickly-pear has adapted to both the deserts of Texas and the cool moist forests of the Rocky Mountains. It blooms from April to June.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a must for anybody interested in our Texas Bloomers.

Founded in 1982 by Lady Bird Johnson and the late Helen Hayes, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is dedicated to protecting and preserving North America's native plants and natural landscapes. Our mission - to educate people about the environmental necessity, economic value, and natural beauty of native plants - guides all that we do. Every day, the Wildflower Center's horticulture, landscape restoration, plant conservation, and environmental education programs bring life to Mrs. Johnson's vision in our gardens and natural areas, and with projects across North America.

Hi Angelina.
Wow, great colours, love the red spreading into the yellow from the bottom of the flower, you have shown that beautifully.
May I suggest a bit of a crop from the bottom to take out the out of focus flower (bottom centre) until the eye rests on the in-focus three across your image and the top of the flower in the bottom right fills in the corner nicely.
Thats just being picky though or should I say prickly, lovely image.

Hello Angelina
Great shot lovely colors very sharp and well frame TFS/Lawhill

Hi Ange,
I don't think you should have cropped the photo...Even with the one out of focus the photo has better depth and dimensions...Beautiful colors...Another fine photo...With all your fabulous notes and photos, soon you will be able to publish a book on Texas nature :)
Jim

Now normally I can't tell what is a cactus and what is not. Your notes on the clear picture certainly are both eye drawing and informative. You must have been born with a shutter release in your hand, not a silver spoon in your mouth. Your descriptions have taken on a more personal touch. Very cool.

Hi Angelina,
Beautiful cactus flowers. Lovely colours. Perfect natural lighting and good exposure of the yellow petals. The OOF flowers adds so much depth to the shot. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Angelina,
You AMAZE me.
Saw the W/S. Both, top and bottom, could have been removed, possibly. However, it is GREAT as is, too.
It has EXCELLENT clarity.
Love the contrasts in those colours. Have always loved GOLD.
Warm & friendly regards from this "cold" yet "warm" Canada from your grateful friend, Mario.
