Nature in Jordan:
What you see is the Siq of Wadi Ghuweir through which I marched for two days with a local guide, downward towards the Dead Sea. You might wonder about the origin of the interesting caテアon, one of many in Jordan. What I gathered from scientific literature: the sandstone was deposited over North Africa and Arabia, the Northern shores of the supercontinent Gondwana, 900 to 530 million years ago. The Ghuweir brook started its carving work much later, at the beginning of the Jordan Rift valley (Ar Ghawr) formation, 23.8 to 5.3 million years ago. The Jordan rift valley with the Dead Sea at its lowest point (minus 790 metres below sea level) is part of a much greater rift that extends from Eastern Turkey down to lake Malawi in Africa.
What about the purple striation in the sandstone? Even the King of Jordan wonders about them in a promotion movie. What I can only guess, being no geologist, goes as follows : the striation has to do with sediment layering in a wet zone, a sort of tabular-planar cross bedding of laminated silts. But it also might reflect later periodic transport of Iron and Manganese ions by water in dry sandstone by water, a kind of chromatography with subsequent fixation by oxidation. Right? Your help will be appreciated.

Hi Dietrich,i'm not a fan of geology, but this is absolutely a masterwork showing the rock design in a wonderful way, magnificent capture from this canyon in the Jordan desert,i lost this show during my trip there,it's a pity. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
