Though the quality is not good, I decided to post this unusual image for several reasons:

1. It is only the second time this species, a Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus), has been posted on TN.

2. It shows the typical undergrowth habitat. It tends to remain hidden even when calling as shown here. This makes it a difficult subject to photograph. This was taken at a distance of a about 30 meters and the image is heavily cropped. He stopped calling and disappeared when I tried to get closer to him.

3. I think it is a beautiful bird. It is more easily heard than seen, but as I am sure that our TN friend Bayram (boreocypriensis) is familiar with this francolin from his native country, I dedicate this image to him.

During the spring its characteristic loud call is to be heard in Cyprus during the breeding season. This male was calling to guard his territory which was located near the Paphos lighthouse. It is a typical sound of the Cyprus countryside.

It is a Middle Eastern species and is quite common in Cyprus which is its most westerly occurrence and occurs sparsely in Turkey.

This was taken with the camera hand-held at a distance of about 30 meters and after heavy cropping it was sharpened a little.

Hello Ivan,
it's always exciting to capture birds in the wild. Mind you it's not often that we get to capture it in perfect conditions. I'm glad you posted this, because as you said its a bird that we not often get to see.
For the condition you had to deal with, you certainly did an excellent job. We get an wonderful view of the natural environment this bird lives in and you also captured nice detail on the bird.
Very well done.

Hi Ivan.
You are right. So rare shot must be here. Despite some blurriness of the image you managed to reflect true wild nature surroundings with excellent details, natural rich colours and wonderful spring (not yet rich) vegetation. My best regards and TFS.

Hi Ivan,
As you mentioned, not the best of quality but you have done a commendable work of bringing it on TN. Very beautiful looking bird and its natural habitat really makes it difficult to shoot. Great illustration of the natural surrounding and the way it guards its territory is well portrayed. Hats off to your effort in showing us something so rare and beautiful. Very nicely composed. Kudos.
TFS.

Hi Ivan,
With so much of grass in the foreground and low light. It is not an easy shot for me atleast. You have captured it very well and ofcourse it looks great. Very good composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Ivan,

Thank you for introducing me to yet another bird. It's always fascinating to see them where they live. It looks like it is a beautiful bird with wonderful colors and markings.

Very well stated and for that simple fact alone is much more worthy than simple points. Alas it is the only thing I can give you with my congratulations on a fine and rare capture in Nature!

Wowwwww. Hi friend Ivan:-),

Today, there were double bayram ("festival") for Bayram from a perfect couple, Ivan & Ulla. Thank you very much for your kind dedication and also thanks for this splendid shot of my homeland species, an elegant bird "Tura". TFS and indebted to you for this pleasant dedication for me! I'm taking this in to my favorites! My friend.
With my best wishes,

Bayram

Merci et au revoir...JP

hello Ivan

you did well to post and share with us this image,
i love it for 2 things, first is that the bird, the Black Francolin
is on his natural habitat surrounded by the vegetations,
and secondly is that you click the camera when the bird
is launching his sound, excellent POV and framing
and great details of all the image, TFS

Thank you Ivan for this picture of such a beautiful bird. I would have never known it existed and it is a beauty. Too bad it is blurred but I'd rather see it than not see it! And I like the undergrowth, with all the colours, the many many different species of grass. Superb and accompanied with great notes, thank you very much,

Francine

Hello Ivan
What a beautiful and significant capture of the Cypriotic Black Francolin showing its typical habitat. Also nice dedication to a native Cypriot scientist. TFS.
Regards from Cyprus,

Nazım

Hi Ivan,
I like the fact that you present this extraordinary bird species. And dedicating the picture to Bayram is a nice gesture.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hello Ivan,

Well-composed and interesting picture. As you said, this is technically not a top quality picture, but it shows very well the variety of plants of this undergrowth habitat. Lighting is good and I like the colours very much.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hola Ivan,
Good decision to post this so difficult to see bird. You have captured it with good details and a beautiful natural background.
TFS, Jos M.

Despite the distance and the undergrowth, you have still managed a representative picture of this rarely seen bird, Ivan.
The tantalizing glimpse is enough to give a fair impression of this bird's beautiful plumage.
TFS and regards.

This IS a fantastic looking species, I like very much the plumage markings and colors. Diffenately worth posting Ivan, Thank you.

Merhaba dear Ivan,
sorry for my delay, I returned newly. This is very nice capture of francolin in its natural habitat. It is very nice dedication for our joint friend Bayram, he already very pleasure.
This is rare on TN, as you mentioned. I saw several one from the ruined airport in the Buffer Zone of Cyprus and several points. Formerly I also observed it from Gksu Bird paradisea in S Turkiye, just across Cyprus island. Unfortunately I couldnt capture it. I hope that I will manage in this (next) May.
It has very beautiful and colorful plumage. Nicely composed and focused. POV also nice. I like your good and informative notes. Nice to read them. Thanks for sharing. best wishes my friend
Ahmet

Not one of your sharpest captures Ivan, but a rare take of a unique combination my friend, with great scientific value. In some instances a sharp image is not that important. TFS indeed and cheers my friend.
Mehmet

Hello Ivan
This is certainly a new bird to me and what I do like so much is that it is in its natural habitat..A picture like this is worth a hundred pinsharp shots of nature in captivity to me. It was a hard shot and you pulled it off..Very good Work indeed.
Tfs and a very Good Easter to you and Ulla.
All the Best
Paul

Thanks for sharing this rare capture Ivan. Shots against the undergrowth are always too busy but the bird here is of unique color and contrast making it stands out well in natural habitat. Useful notes and a fine image worth sharing. Regards. Jusni

Hi Ivan, as you say the quality is not the top, but it's very interesting view of habitat and the bird is very beautiful, you made a good choice to post it, ciao Silvio

Hello Ivan

I can appreciate the value of this posting.A very good capture considering the rarity of the bird on TN and the habitat they live in.
It is still very well seen with good plumage detail and colour.
Nicely shown in a natural setting.

Hi Ivan

Good on you for posting this guy in his natural environment. Although the quality isn't all that great as you say, its an interesting species and you can see all the distinguishing features; clearly a beautiful bird in the wild.
