Hi Trekkers,

Winter is the perfect time for finding Ascomycetes (wiki link) - although most species (there are at least 64.000 in total) may grow in other seasons also, but they're very spectacular now, when most colors are white or paler... Some Ascomycota are very conspicuously colored... some have the same life strategy as polypores or crust fungi ... some reached the evolutionary level of the cap fungi... so they're almost as varied as the more evolved phylum Basidiomycetes, what we commonly know as "fungi". My new theme Ascomycetes (link on TN) gives you an impression what they're alike, feel free to contribute if you photograph one.

Most Ascomycota are impossible to identify without microscopical analysis, and this is the case here, too. So, my ID specification is rather a guess now when I say, after being helped by Edit Szilvテ。sy mycologist's opinion, that my model on the pic is Scutellinia crucipila (Cooke & W. Phillips) J. Moravec, one of the less known members of the genus. Eyelash is a characteristic macroscopic feature of this genera, and this species has very short, same-colored ones as the apothecia, on the edge of the ascocarps (and are almost invisible on this photo).

Fruitbodies (there were 15-20 in total) have grown on bare, clayey soil, and were 2-8 millimeters in size. This was the 2nd time I found this species, after our rendezvous in October, in another but similar location in Ireland.

Photo was done in the Fota Arboretum, in this month, in manual exposure mode. PP: moderate cropping, selective sharpening after re-sizing.

Of course, this species is posted for the first time on TrekNature. Thanks for looking.

Hi Laszlo, excellent pic and very useful note too,not easy to find the exact name of this species of a big family,it's like to give a name to the lycaeneidae that i found in Georgia...ehehe...great post, and a first time is always a great satisfaction! All the best for the new year and thanks,Luciano

Hallo laszlo
very nice picture with good sharpness and beautiful colours

thanks i wish you and your family a happy and health 2018 gr lou

I guess that you've captured a fine seldom creature friend Laszlo ...at least unknown for my untrained eye. Fungus has always been a fascinated subject and your entry has brought wonderful enlightening on that rare species . Love the striking Orange color ! I guess that because of its size you've battled a bit with the shot ....understandable ... at 1/15s the slightest movement could cause unwanted camera shake which is evident here ... other than that ... I love it !!
Kind Regards
