|The Barn Owl Tyto alba has one of the largest breeding ranges of any bird, but in the UK and in Europe suffered substantial declines throughout the 20th century, leading to the species being given the highest level of legal protection in UK law. |
Although mostly nocturnal, they often hunt by day in winter, when they have young to feed and, particularly, in areas where they are undisturbed. I do most of my owl watching and photography in just such a place, and if you are very patient and position yourself carefully you may be rewarded by a close encounter with one of these silent hunters. I never tire of these rare and spine-tingling moments, and photography gives me a chance to share a small part of those memories. This bird is captured beginning its dive into the tall grass below in pursuit of some small rodent.
2015-16 has seen a very low numbers of voles in much of the UK and Barn Owls (and other species such as Kestrels) have suffered from the shortage of their preferred prey. Hopefully this situation will improve as the year progresses.
It's been a while since I posted anything here, so I just thought I'd say "hi" to everyone ;)
