I took this on a photography day at Cotswold Wildlife Park. This Crested Gecko was a great model and allowed us to get really close... it's eyes remind me of the great eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings see here: http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l111/SilentDespair/Heroes/lord-of-the-rings-ii-eye-of-sauron-.jpg

I hope you like it!

The New Caledonian Crested Gecko, Guichenot's Giant Gecko or Eyelash Gecko, Rhacodactylus ciliatus, is a species of gecko native to southern New Caledonia. This species was thought extinct until it was rediscovered in 1994. Along with several other Rhacodactylus species, it is being considered for protected status by the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.

amazing close up, TFS Ori

Hola Joe, felicidades por tan original y creativo trabajo. No suelen verse tomas de detalle y nos descubren en ocasiones detalles muy interesantes.
Un saludo: Josep Ignasi.

Hi Joe!

You present us a magnificient macro picture of the Gecko's eye. The picture is surprising as well as amazing. The rich details highlight the effect of the picture at best. It's a great "Joe Kellard"!

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Joe
It is one of your best shots. Beautiful. Great idea, perfect realisation. Perfect crop, great sharpness and exposure Nothing to critique

Hi Joe

This is really awesome! Geckos are very beautiful lizards and i love them a lot. It's terrific to see shots of them here on TN, too.
And this is a special treat since its eyes are a distinct and special feature. I love their colorful and mosaic iris and their long vertical pupil. Your skill helped you focus on these elements here and you succeeded in producing a very interesting and gorgeous shot.
Superb sharpness on the details and great lighting, too.
However, i must say that that flash reflection does feel distracting. I tried a WS to try and clone it out...hope you don't mind.
Anyway, great stuff!

BRAVO and TFS
Horia

A beautifully detailed eye close up of a fine nocturnal gecko specimen Joe, the rich capillary webbing of the "multipupillated" iris can easily be seen here. A perfect job my friend!
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Joe,
Excellent extreme closeup of the eye, this is what macro is all about.
One can get lost in the details of this world within in a world..
You definitely have an "eye" for the shot ;-}}
Well done!
Howard
PS - Good WS too, I was going to suggest that :)

hello joe

GREAT MACRO SHOT!!!
I like the picture very mutch

NO COMMANT!!!
greeting lou

took me a minute or so but now I see:-) I see:-) Nevermind...bad joke...very superior image..worthy of some industry for sure...Keep on keeping on Joey....
Bob

Hi Joe, Brilliant macro. Well done. Regards - Adil.

Hi Joe!
What a great title to this photo :) I remember that some months ago Grzegorze (red45) presented an eye of the frog with the some title, so now it is a great oportunity to compare "different points of view for Tolkien's story" ;>
My best congratulation because of the great idea!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Hello Joe,
Amazing and special photo. Superb sharp details and an excellent composition. The colors are splendid. I hope the gecko isn't blind now on one eye. A flashlight right into the eye....

Peter

Hi Joe. This is a very good close up of the Eye of the Gecko. You have natural colours and fine detail. The one things that worries me is does the flash harm the sight of the gecko. I did read an article about this . Do you have any thought on this. Well done TFS
Nick..

Hi Joey,
an eye-catching creative shot, amazingly closely approached. Fascinating to see those richly structured details of skin around the eye, and the bizarre structures of the gecko's iris in powerfully rich colours. Thank you!
With best regards,
Peter

Hi Joe
Excellent macro work as usual! Superb detail and well controlled flash. Reminds me of one of my favourite scientific facts - the eye has evolved on at least 40 separate occasions during the course of evolutionary history. Although some are so different to our eyes, we are still drawn to them.
Kind Regards
Vinny

Hi Joe,
Now we know where they got the idea. I hope they paid you well;o) Excellent macro shot with lots of fine sharp details, good lighting and natural colours.

Cheers

Ciao Joe,
un'altra bella super macro con fantastici dettagli e bellissimi colori, il piccolo riflesso disturba leggermente, ottimo il consiglio di horia di eliminarlo.
TFS.
Maurizio

Hello Joey !
Yes, that's right, you have really found Sauron ! Wow ! Geat comparison. I love all those details you managed to capture within the eye and around it, all those tiny "horns" look great. I also like the reddish-brown color of the eye, and your tight composition works very well here. A real beauty. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hi Joe,

fantastic shot of this crazy looking eye, great colours and details. Very nice observed and done!

Adrian

Ciao Joe, amazing macro, it really seems eyes off Sauron, fantastic details, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Joe

A fine symetrical shot of this gecko's eye. I guess the only nit is the flash reflection in the centre. I agree with Horia, you should have considered cloning it out. But its certainly a great post.

Chris

Hello Joe

Incredible.
Wonderful POV the detail and lighting is terrific.
This is a striking image that I think has commercial value.
Great job.

Hello Joe,
This is almost scary close, magnificent macro work with outstanding quality throughout.

Hi Joe

I see you have a Lord of the Rings theme going on with a couple of your pictures :) This does look like Saurons eye. The shot is stunning with amazing details and colours. It is pin sharp. You certainly got close. What else did you get to photograph?

Karan

Wow Joey! I just saw that movie recently, and I'm very impressed! You got it just in the right mood! Even as a thumbnail without reading the title I thought that! Thanks again for sharing this great image "eye" ;-)
I think I'll add this one to my favorites! Well done! Cheers Josh Lewis.

Hi Joe,

Dear Joe,
A very interesting photo - apparently other member think so too (1729 x viewed!) - and I have added it to my favorites to enable me to view this gem at ease.

When you have time, I am very keen to hear - how close you were to the animal - when you took the photo!?!

I am afraid I can say nothing more, not yet expressed by other, more knowledgable members - except that your work is VERY SPECIAL - and you can be VERY PROUD about it!

Have a nice evening
Best wishes and
Kind regards
