The topic

Eryngium maritimum ((Linnaeus, 1753)
This floral species is one of the most emblematic of the French coastlines, especially the sandy coasts but it regresses due to the overcrowding of the littoral. This specie is protected in a certain number of states in France.

A few information on the plant

Characters of this plant:
窶「 Perennial plant, green bluish and extremely thorny
窶「 The stem is upright and around fifty centimetres of height
窶「 Stoloniferous root system allowing the plant to survive from one year to another and to accept very dry condition all along his life
窶「 Bluish involucre, 4-6 leaflets leathery, spiny
窶「 Calyx with star-shaped teeth

The plant looks like Carduus; Although the plant looks like Carduus it must not be confused with it: the inflorescence of Eryngium is in umbel ramified into small umbels, and carried by a spiny bluish involucre.

Its dried flowers have often been over used for dry bouquets by amateur or professional florists. Added to the over-frequentation of the littoral, this explains the regression and sometimes the disappearance of the plant. It is now partially protected in France and fully protected in Germany)

Hello Philippe,
The beautiful purple petals have fallen and left you will this lovely seed pod, which is still quite attractive. A new species for me with unique features like no other plant I've seen. The leaves alone are so intricately patterned, almost like a type of holly. Wonderful detail and rich yet natural colors. very nice!!

nice portrait, TFS Ori
