A strange fungus, found in a beech wood.

Geastrum triplex Jungh.
Family : Geastraceae
Common names : Collared Earthstar [En], G饌stre trois enveloppes [Fr], Gekraagde aardster [Nl], Halskrausen Erdstern [De]

Immature fruit bodies are spherical耀omewhat resembling puffballs with pointed beaks預nd are partially or completely buried in the ground. As the fungus matures, the outer layer of tissue (the exoperidium) splits into four to eight pointed segments that spread outwards and downwards, lifting and exposing the spherical inner spore sac. The spore sac contains the gleba, a mass of spores and fertile mycelial tissue that when young is white and firm, but ages to become brown and powdery. Often, a layer of the exoperidium splits around the perimeter of the spore sac so that it appears to rest in a collar or saucer. Atop the spore sac is a small pointed beak, the peristome, which has a small hole from which spores may be released.

The species is widespread and can be found in Asia, Australia, Europe, and both North and South America. The fungus has a history of use in the traditional medicines of native North America and China.

Hello Catherine,
Your right about this being a strange looking fungus, I have never seen one quite like it before. I am guessing that once it gets old and dried out, that you could step on it and a powder like substance would shoot out of the tiny hole in it's top. We do have some around here that act in this manner once they fully mature.
You have captured fine detail and good natural coloration. Your choice of an f/13 aperture has resulted in wonderful DOF and the exposure is right on the money. Well done!!

Hello Catherine,
this is a special and unique presentation of the fungi. I don't think I have seen any in my place.
Such a new scene to me, and the subject stands out beautifully on the brown fallen leaves.

Regards,
Foozi

Hi Cathy,
Nice pic of the old Geastrum triplex. Awesome light management and contrast - probably the crop is a bit tight. Otherwise an excellent shot. Congrats and tfs.
Have a great new year, friendly regards, L疽zl
