To escape the searing heat of the Northern Plains, I ended up travelling to one of the most famous birding destinations in the Himalayas 'Pangot'. This frame is on one of the most common type of Magpie found in the mountains - 'Red Billed Blue Magpie. This bird has an impressive tail and is often referred to as a nuisance bird as they seldom allow any other birds within their vicinity.

I got this shot at late afternoon while waiting at a spot near a water hole where the locals had seen a barking deer the previous evening. This birdie descended all of a sudden & was again about to take off. In a hurry to get the frame, I missed out on capturing the entire tail of the Magpie.

About Red Billed Blue magpie:

The Red Billed Blue Magpie is a resident of the Himalayas, NE India & Bangladesh. It has a more extensive white nape than the yellow billed Magpies with brighter turquoise blue mantles & wings. It has a loud but piercing voice and is often found within the broad leaved forests & cultivation.

I'm familiar with these long-tailed Magpies of the Himalayas, Satirtha; my native place in Himachal has plenty of them.
One can figure out it's a snapshot since the bird is ready to take off again. Still, despite slight nicking off of its tail, the features and colours of the bird have been well captured and there's a hint of catch-light in its black eye.
Hope your visit to Pangot gave you the chance to capture many more birds and we hope to see them soon.

Another beautiful bird picture, Satirtha. Very good composition and BG. But magnificent 'Tail'.......! I don't like without full tail and it looks like you haven't noticed corner of the frame which is essential before click.
Have a nice week,

Hello Satirtha,
Just about the time you think you saw them all someone post a bird that you haven't seen before, what a beauty. I love its contrasting blue, white and black plumage in addition to that bright orange beak. Sharply focused and displaying exceptional detail. Great eye contact and perfectly exposed!!
